o Path to president - His history in commanding the military and NATO proved to the republican party that Eisenhower had what it takes to be president.

o Highlights/Lowlights of career - Lowlight: The U2 Plane was found crash landed in the Soviet Union and the Cold War ended up continuing. He also took no comment on Brown vs. Board of education because he disagreed with the ruling. He did very little to enforce the ruling, but had to send in federal troops to calm the riot in Little Rock. He did little to speed desegregation because he felt that it was his job to enforce public peace. This only encouraged school districts to resist.

Highlight: The Eisenhower Doctrine - states that the United States would defend the middle east against and Communist attack or takeover. This protected the Middle East, but helped ignite the cold war.

Two domestic policy issues - Eisenhower didn't like dealing with racial issues and generally let them play out by themselves. He involved himself as little as possible. But ended up desegregating the military.

He continued the New Deal and Fair Deal Programs which pushed a wartime economy to a peacetime economy

- The Domino Theory: He believed that once one country fell to communism that all the surrounding countries would fall to communism.

He focused on maintaining world peace and tried to do so through the atoms for peace program which loaned uranium to nations for peaceful purposes

He focused on maintaining world peace and did what he could to promote it.

He was a little old fashioned in that he didn't have the views of the time. He didn't think school desegregation was necessary and he did stay away from racial issues. Even still he desegregated the military stating that "there must be no second class citizens in this country"

He kept up with the previous Presidents in that he was switching the economy from a wartime to a peacetime economy even though the cold war had just begun.

He actually negotiated a peace treaty with the Soviet Union, but he messed it up by spying on them

He was good enough to get himself elected for a second term and he negotiated a treaty with the Soviets

He had a vision for a more peaceful world and put the steps in to make it happen.

He had to be a good leader to be the commander of NATO and to command the forces on D-day
